The Biarritz Surf Festival is one of Europe's biggest surfing events. For just over a week this French resort is transformed into a Californian-style beach party as many of the world's top surfers and thousands of holidaymakers descend on the Côte des Basques, the home of French surfing.

The event kicks-off with the Ho'Okupa, a ceremonial mixing of the waters between the hundreds of surfers arriving from around the world. The competitions come thick and fast and are interspersed with demonstrations of tandem surfing, paddle-board racing and Tahitian pirogues (canoes). There are also opportunities for novices to learn the tricks of the trade from the experts.

Besides the action in the water there is all manner of entertainment on the beach, in the streets and at the town's Palais des Festivals. Bungee jumps, surfing films, picture exhibitions, concerts and, of course, plenty of parties keep people busy well into the night.
