South Tyrol, Italy's most northerly region, hosts the annual International Wine Festival in the spa town of Merano, high up in the Dolomites. Professional and amateur wine tasters try wines from more than 460 Italian and international wineries and pair them with South Tyrolian delicacies like pumpkin and knodel (dumplings) at the annual food festival, Culinaria, held at the same time.

Although South Tyrol produces just seven per cent of Italy's wine, the region is famous for winning prestigious wine awards. The secret is a wine-growing savoir-faire which dates back 3000 years, a microclimate which guarantees 300 days of annual sunshine and varying altitudes from the hot valley floor to cool, vine-covered slopes reaching 1000 metres.

Choose from full-bodied reds (60 per cent), fragrant whites (40 per cent) and savour the aromatic grape variety for which the region is particularly known - Gewürtraminer.

Although the festival itself is celebrated over three days, there are workshops, meetings and other activities that take place in the two weeks preceding the event.
