White and red, spring and Spanish, pearl and pickling, this event celebrates the multi-faceted flavours of the Allium cepa, not to mention their tasty relatives - chives, leeks and shallots.
Farmers from all over Switzerland present their produce at this huge market. Over 50 tons of onions decorate the streets, where plaited strings take their place alongside other seasonal vegetables. Given the chilly breeze from the nearby Alps, steaming bowls of onion soup and hot onion tarts are welcome winter warmers.
As well as an abundance of onions, there's street entertainment to keep the crowds amused. Expect confetti battles, jesters, live music and improvised performances.
