The Festival de Sor Ana de Los Angeles de Monteagudo celebrates the patron saint of the Santa Catalina monastery, located in the centre of Arequipa. The festival offers an opportunity for you to explore the convent, which was not opened up until 1970. Literally a small metropolis itself, it used to house more than 400 nuns and the complex still functions as a convent today. Now that it is open to the public, a tour inside reveals some of the convent's darkest secrets - ask about the iron chastity belt and cat-o-nine-tails on display in the old living quarter.
