For a piece de resistance in a city obsessed with food, little beats the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. There are events city-wide, with some even spilling into the surrounding countryside.

With 140 events promised over the ten days, it's clear the festival is in rude health. Expect favourite events to return - such as the "World's Longest Lunch" - where the length refers to the table, stretching yards and yards along the bank of the Yarra (apparently the food's OK too).
The programme is peppered with gastronomic stars like Michel Roux, famous winemakers and many of Australia's top chefs turn up for Sizzle! The Great Aussie BBQ. Other events include Out of the Frying Pan, a day full of food-related discussions from recipe-writing to future gastronomy trends, and masterclasses in both cooking and wine.
Previous years have included a chocolate festival, a food writers' festival and tours of markets and wineries. As to the wine, well you just have to remember that in June 2000 Melbourne was named one of the great wine cities of the world along with Bordeaux, Florence, San Francisco, Santiago and Porto. The city was the first outside Italy to be entitled a "Slow Food City" by the international Slow Food organisation, a sure sign of a food-loving thumbs-up.
Please visit the festival website for full details of all the events.
