The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at Reliant Park claims to be the largest livestock show in the world - two million people visit each year over the three weeks.

The show is packed with events including orchestral and pop concerts and fireworks. Gigs in the past have featured such legends as Elvis Presley and Sonny and Cher. The 2008 entertainment line-up includes country musicians Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

The highlight of the special events is the All Around Cowboy Award, which goes to the cowboy who wins the most combined prize money at the Houston Rodeo in two or more events. His own prize is another US$25,000 (lucrative work being a cowboy these days) and an official Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo belt, buckle and saddle.

The event also incorporates Black Heritage Day, celebrating the cultural contributions of African Americans to Houston. The Catalena Cowgirls precision horseback drill team perform routines before and after each rodeo, and you can see for yourself just what it's like to be inches away from a one-ton raging bull with the special Helmet Camera worn by performing clowns and cowboys.

There is also a multimedia spectacular at every one of the 20 or so performances, along with an incredible show of videos, lasers and pyrotechnics to musical accompaniment.
