The most famous carnival city on Earth, Rio holds a variety of balls - glitzy and garish - during carnival every year, catering to all budgets and sexual orientations.

The best nights for going to the balls are Carnival Friday, Saturday and Tuesday. The most formal of these is the gala ball, which takes place on Saturday at the luxury hotel Copacabana Palace. This ball has become an institution for Rio socialites, so if you like hanging around with famous footballers, models and the mayor, then this event is for you. Please note that black tie or luxury costumes are mandatory.
The most glitzy ball of all is the gay gala ball at the Scala in the Leblon district on Tuesday. The costumes are exotic and the whole affair is televised (so if you're camera shy, wear a mask). The people taking part parade along a walkway and onto a platform in front of the venue, showing off their incredible costumes.
Along Copacabana Beach, there are several balls which cater for single people. These take place on every night and themes vary. Tickets usually cost about US$20 and can be bought on the door. There are plenty of other gay and mixed balls downtown and around the Sambodrome on the Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí. Ask around about which ones are safe though, as some of them attract a rougher crowd where it would probably be wiser to go with a local.
To really get into the spirit of things, dress up. Travel lightly, though, as you don't want to be worrying about belongings - make it a hassle-free night and enjoy. Tickets for most events can be bought on the night; only a select few (the pricier, star-studded ones) sell out in advance.
