Buy antiques in the Spiegelkwartier, high-street fashion on Kalverstraat, and retro collectables on the Jordaan.
Nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat snake from Central Station across the Dam and down to Muntplein, with an endless array of high-street shops. On the Dam, De Bijenkorf is Amsterdam’s major department store. Go west towards the Jordaan for quirkier clothes and homewares, south to PC Hooftstraat for designer gear, and to Spiegelgracht east of Leidseplein for antiques.
The most famous is the fleamarket at Waterlooplein (open Mon-Sat), where you’ll find jeans, fake fur coats and old vinyl records. In De Pijp, the Albert Cuypmarkt is a local favourite for anything from bedsheets to cheese. On Saturdays, head to the Boerenmarkt at Noorderkerk for organic produce. On Queen’s Day, the whole city becomes one giant market, with everyone chalking out pitches on the pavement and selling the contents of their attic.
Many shops remain closed Monday mornings; Thursday is late-night opening until 9pm. Otherwise, most shops are open 9.30am-6pm. Sunday is mixed, with bigger stores usually open in the afternoon. Most markets are open Monday-Saturday, 9.30am-5.30pm, and closed Sunday.
