Swap daytime café culture for a night of partying with carefree locals and out-of-town A-listers, all within the sanctum of the city walls.
Avignon's nightlife begins and ends in the heart of town. Here, along the narrow, crooked streets, clustered between restaurants, overlooking squares and gardens, sometimes within sight of the walls of the papal palace itself, Avignon's scene ranges from neighbourhood favourite to DJ chillout to gay- and lesbian-friendly.
Although the historic dyers' district is a short walk from the papal palace, the cluster of theatres here means that during the summer, and especially during the Avignon Festival, the neighbourhood comes into its own. The restaurants and bars that dot the surrounding streets fill up accordingly.
Discover what's happening in town by picking up a copy of the free weekly magazine Cesar or the fortnightly Rendezvous d'Avignon at the tourist office, where you can also purchase tickets to events in town.
Avignon is more than just a French ditty. Romantics may choose to explore the town to the tune of David Hasselhoff's Avignon, but we suggest hunting down Miles Davis' last album, Avignon, a recording of a concert performance here.
