Big spenders swill martinis at swanky lounges while well-heeled international students sip champagne at ritzy restaurant bars then move on to dance club where they can bump and grind.
A gathering place for everyone from yuppies and baseball-capped students to the guys in the hood. Landsdowne Street is where to find hip dance clubs or have a Guinness or two with friends at a neighbourhood Irish pub like Doyle's Café, the Boston institution which has been around since 1882.
You don't have to be a student, but you have to like to bar-hop in Cambridge. Some of the clubs here have live rock bands, others are strictly for dancing, while plenty of pubs are just a good place to enjoy a brew.
Most bars open for lunch and many stay open until 2am. Instead of two-for-one Happy Hours, there's free food on offer. Smoking is prohibited in bars and clubs and it's illegal to buy a drink after 2am. Bars close up if the weather or business is bad.
Nurse a beer at Cheers and hum Where Everybody Knows Your Name sung by Gary Portnoy. Ride the T to MTA by the Kingston Trio; walk the Charles River Esplanade to Dirty Water by the Standells; sit in traffic with Dream On by Aerosmith.
