Brussels - Highlights

Brussels is a foot-friendly city whose key attractions cluster on and around the ornate Grand' Place.

A great rectangle of cobbled stones, the Grand' Place is Europe's largest square, lined with gilded guild houses and the lacy gothic town hall, housing the worthy Brussels City Museum. Follow narrow streets to the humorous Manneken-Pis. Walk east to the Mont des Arts complex to see Bruegel and Rubens at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts and Magritte and Delvaux in the underground curve of the adjoining Modern Art Museum. The Musical Instruments Museum wins broad appeal with its art nouveau setting and a rooftop café with views. There is more Horta to enjoy at the architect's former home, now the Horta Museum, near avenue Louise.

It's a tram ride away to the Atomium – visit in daytime for exhibitions and at night to see the cells illuminated or to enjoy a meal with a view at its gourmet restaurant.

Sightseeing Tips

Bruxellois are more excited by dining than sightseeing so their surrealist and art nouveau treasures are crowd-free. Avoid museums on Monday (when most close). Buy the 24h, 48h or 72h Brussels Card for access to major museums and exhibitions, including the Museum of Musical Instruments and Royal Museum of Fine Arts as well as free transport. Time your visit with the summer opening of the Royal Palace or September's Heritage Day.
