Cross the River Plate into Uruguay, or head inland to experience pampa
culture.
Uruguay is only a couple of hours away over the River Plate. Take a ferry to the
well-preserved museum town of Colonia del Sacramento, or keep going to reach the
laid-back capital, Montevideo.
The River Paraná is to the north of Buenos Aires, fanning out in a wide
delta, perfect for wildlife-spotting on a lazy summer's day. Heading
west or south of the city will take you into the never-ending horizons of the
pampa
(grasslands), Argentina's heartland. Learn about gaucho (cowboy)
traditions or visit a ranch in San Antonio de Areco, and sup beer at a bar that
hasn't changed in two centuries in Mercedes.
