From its bright barrios to the country fairs, see the colourful Buenos Aires
behind the postcards.
In the south, brightly coloured houses line the Caminito area in La Boca. You can
head north for the subtropical greenery of Park 3 de Febrero, or the delicate
colonial-era pastels on display at the Isaac Fernández Blanco Museum of
Hispanic-American Art. The weekend gaucho (cowboy) Mataderos Fair
out west is a taste of life on the endless pampa (herding grassland) that starts
at the city's edge.
Strange but True
English influence is all over Buenos Aires – from red letterboxes to
English-sounding football teams such as River Plate and Boca Juniors. Tea at 4pm is
still a common custom, and you can still see the building on Florida street that
once housed the only Harrods ever opened outside of the UK.
