Pampa-fed beef grilled to perfection on a barbecue, or Patagonian lamb roasted on an open fire, are what Buenos Aires offers in abundance. Wash these meaty morsels down with fine Malbec wine and heavenly Italian-style ice cream.
Eclectic, inventive and ever-changing, Palermo is the top destination for porteño (port-dwelling) foodies. Mexican, Armenian, Italian and sushi rub shoulders in the elegant districts of Las Cañitas and edgy Palermo Hollywood.
Restaurants lining the old-fashioned cobbled streets of San Telmo offer simple, hearty and great-value Argentine dishes. These include the classic asado (barbecued beef) with salad and chips, and empanadas (little pasties filled with cheese or beef).
Buenos Aires' most modern barrio (neighbourhood) is situated along its former dock area. Many of the 19th-century buildings have been converted into attractive waterfront restaurants, offering juicy steaks, delicious pasta, and international cuisine.
Eat out from 9pm, as that's when restaurant life really gets going. Popular restaurants will stay busy until past 11pm, but a porteño (port-dweller) waiter will rarely ask you to vacate your table, no matter how many people are waiting. Tipping is usually 10%.
