Chic, cosmopolitan and unapologetically local, Ohio's second city melds mid-western charm and modern style. Cleveland's eclectic cuisine, modern art and musical heritage rival bigger, better-known cities and can all be easily packed into a flying visit to this friendly, welcoming mini-metropolis.
Cleveland has a lot more to see than you might expect, from its historic Downtown neighbourhoods to its labyrinthine museums in University Circle and beyond. Stroll through the market in Chinatown or pay homage to rock royalty at the Hall of Fame in the North Coast District.
At Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, ride the new monster swing, the Skyhawk, opened in summer 2006. Check out the funky eateries and unique boutiques in the up-and-coming neighbourhoods of Lorain-Denison and Tremont districts.
Downtown is packed with designer boutiques, department stores and art galleries. Ohio City is a haven for foodies and collectors with its antiques auction houses. Find one-of-a-kind handmade glass or ceramics in the Tremont District, or a complete vintage outfit in Little Italy.
Summer skies are perfect for watching Cleveland Indians baseball or meandering along the miles of trails in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Metroparks system. Fish, swim, or dive in Lake Erie and head to the Zoo &Rainforest to see hundreds of species of animals and plants. Winter is American football season, when you can see the Cleveland Browns play on the gridiron.
The area University Circle is Cleveland's home to world-class performing arts companies and museums. Enjoy the sonic grandeur of Severance Hall or catch theatre, opera and dance at one of over a dozen venues. The Theater District is home to the Playhouse Square Center's drama and comedy troupes, many of which perform in meticulously restored historic theatres.
Cleveland provides an impressive array of cuisines. Steaks and red wine are staples of Downtown power lunches, while nouvelle dishes prevail at the hipper eateries in the Tremont and Ohio City districts. You can get perogies (dumplings) and gyros (kebabs) at the West Side Market, or Peruvian tamales in the Gateway District.
View the skyline from a fishing boat on Lake Erie, or dive wrecks below the surface. Alternatively, see how mind and body work together from the inside out at Healthspace Cleveland.
