The Cuyahoga River splits Cleveland into West and East sides. Sprawling for miles away from the southern shore of Lake Erie, the city is home to many varied enclaves.
You'll find most attractions split between downtown and the University Circle area to the east; Cleveland's public transport network serves both areas well.
Downtown, you'll find the deal-making Civic Center, glitzy Theater District, funky Warehouse District, shoppers delight Tower City and laid back Quadrangle and Gateway areas. Head to the West Side for urbane Ohio City and down-to-earth Tremont, then back across the river to the East Side's old-country Little Italy and artsy University Circle.
The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) comprises both a heavy and light rail system as well as buses. The three lines of the rail system, or the 'Rapid', as it's known, connect downtown and the North Coast district with the airport (to the southwest) and with the suburbs on the East Side out to the north east. The bus system is extensive, taking up the slack where the Rapid doesn't go. Fares are good for a single ride and there are daily, weekly and monthly passes available.
A taxi is often the quickest, most convenient way to get around, especially to places the Rapid doesn't go. Call or find a taxi rank.
You can save on RTA fares with a variety of passes, all good on both the Rapid and the bus, including a 5-ride pass and daily, weekly and monthly passes. Driving in Cleveland is fairly straightforward, though finding parking can be a challenge.
Cleveland's past is on show at its many 'living history' museums. Imagine tall ships as you breathe the Erie air.
