Delve deeper into Edinburgh and you’ll uncover some strange tales and surprising
sights from royals that love to sail, to colonels that love to waddle. Climb Calton
Hill for a handy viewpoint to see the entire city centre and its attractions.
Travel like the Queen when you visit the Royal Yacht Britannia, wander the elegant
Georgian New Town and its variety of shops and bars, or visit the scene of the
heart-warming Greyfriar’s Bobby tale at Greyfriars Kirk. The stunning land
sculpture outside the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a great place to
relax before taking in a Francis Bacon masterpiece.
Strange but True
Edinburgh Zoo is home to the world’s most highly decorated penguin, Nils Olav II, who
has risen to the rank of honorary Colonel-in-Chief in the Norwegian Army. The
current Nils Olav is carrying on the tradition after the original died in 1987. A
bronze statue of him now stands in the zoo, donated by his former comrades.
