Frankfurt - Food & Drink

There's more to Frankfurt than frankfurters: dine on local delicacies in Alt-Sachsenhausen, and Thai, French or Italian food on Fressgass.

Traditional: Alt-Sachsenhausen

Sample Frankfurt's famed Handkäs mit Musik (curd cheese on bread, topped with vinegar and onions) in tucked-away courtyards. Wash it down with the city's favourite drink, Ebblewoi, or apple wine. The low-alcohol, cider-like wine was much loved by the likes of Charlemagne, some 1200 years ago.

Eclectic: Central

Frankfurt's Fressgass, as locals affectionately call the central Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, has everything from frankfurter sausages to sushi. For more upmarket dining, head to Grosse Eschersheimer Strasse or seek out a small bistro on Opernplatz, in the shadow of the city's classical opera house.

Trendy: Berger Strasse

Mingle with Frankfurt's young locals in fashionable eateries around Bornheim's Berger Strasse, where tables and wooden benches spill out onto the pavement. For a chilled Pilsner beer afterwards, there are also lots of bars at hand.

Dining Tips

Picnic in Grüneburgpark on German cheese, olives, fresh rolls and pretzels from the delicatessens of Frankfurt's culinary mile, Fressgass. In restaurants, service charge is usually not included and a tip of around 10% is expected.
