Kuala Lumpur may seem like one vast urban sprawl, but the city’s excellent public transport network means that it’s quick and easy to reach most of the top attractions.
Head to Merdeka Square, the heart of colonial Kuala Lumpur, to find Victorian St Mary’s Cathedral, Moorish Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the mock-Tudor Royal Selangor Club.
Southwest of the city centre are the pretty Lake Gardens, where you can spend the day boating on the lake or walking through the orchid and hibiscus gardens. Nearby, cast an eye over the artistic treasures of the Islamic Arts Museum or discover Malaysian history at the National Museum. No visit to Kuala Lumpur would be complete without seeing the soaring Petronas Twin Towers, while the more adventurous can go diving with sharks at Aquaria KLCC.
Many museums and other attractions in Kuala Lumpur offer free entry, including the National Art Gallery and several minor museums like the Telekom Museum and the Royal Malaysian Police Museum. Some places are closed one day a week, often on Monday. Try and avoid weekends at very popular attractions such as the Petronas Twin Towers skybridge.
