Buy pewter mementoes at Royal Selangor Pewter, pick up a batik shirt or traditional handicrafts at the Central Market, clothes and electronics in the Golden Triangle and “designer” watches on Jalan Petaling.
Buy clothes, cameras, electronics and computer software at the shopping malls in the Golden Triangle area, especially around Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Imbi. The latter is dominated by Malaysia’s largest mall, the colossal 700+ shop Berjaya Times Square. Smaller shops selling crafts and souvenirs can be found in Chinatown, while upmarket designerwear is on sale at malls and specialist stores along Jalan Ampang.
Kuala Lumpur’s Central Market is a hive of activity with stalls selling traditional arts and crafts, souvenirs and antiques. It’s aimed at tourists and you’ll need your bargaining skills. The hectic market on Jalan Petaling offers “authentic” CDs, copy watches and cheap clothes and accessories. It closes up in the evening – a good time to snag some bargains just before stall holders go home. Chow Kit Market sells a bit of everything during the day, before the food stalls take over in the evening.
At markets, you will be expected to haggle, and initial prices will often be set ridiculously high for foreigners. Standard shopping hours are 9am-6pm, although the big malls are often open until around 10pm daily. Fresh produce markets are usually open on weekends.
