Buy marmalade and shortbread at Fortnum and Mason, the latest Monopoly board from Hamleys and quirky fashion from Portobello Road Market. For a one-stop shop, head to the mammoth Westfield London Shopping Centre.
Pick up diamonds and designer labels on Old and New Bond streets and tailored suits on Savile Row. Splash out at the palatial Harrods and Harvey Nichols department stores in Knightsbridge, and join the crowd bagging high-street fashion on Oxford Street, home to the flagship Topshop and up-to-the-minute Selfridges. Shop in Hampstead, the King's Road, Chelsea and Notting Hill's smart boutiques for fewer crowds and a village feel.
London's markets come alive at the weekend. On Saturdays, foodies shop at Borough Market, in the shadow of Southwark Cathedral, while fashionistas browse Portobello Road Market's mix of antiques, collectables and vintage clothes in Notting Hill. On Sundays garden lovers trawl Columbia Road Flower Market (until 3pm), while clothes collectors buy one-offs at the up-and-coming Spitalfields fashion market or studenty Camden.
Avoid Oxford Street on a Saturday. Standard shopping hours are Monday-Saturday 9.30am-6.30pm (late-night opening Thursday), Sunday 11am-5pm. Markets open weekends.
