From Flamenco guitars, antiques and handicrafts in Huertas and the old town, to the finest Spanish design, wines and artworks that money can buy in Salamanca and Chueca, you hardly need an excuse to spend in Madrid.
Pick up top designer labels on Calle Goya, Calle Serrano and Calle Ortega y Gasset in Salamanca, and fine chorizo from delicatessens with a difference. Wine stores here, including Lavinia, are extremely well stocked. On Calle Almirante and Calle Conde de Xiquena in Chueca the design gets more cutting edge, while Calle Fuencarral is good for more everyday, yet still stylish, Spanish and international clothing brands.
Fight your way through the junk to uncover gems at El Rastro flea market. Higher quality, albeit more expensive, antiques are available in the shops nearby. Coin and stamp lovers could get lucky at the Mercadillo de Filatelia y Numismática held at Plaza Mayor on Sunday (9am-2pm). For vintage clothes check out Mercado de Fuencarral. Wander round colourful neighbourhood food markets for stacks of delicious produce.
Lots of smaller shops, and some of the bigger ones, shut down after lunch until around 5pm. They then stay open until about 8pm.
