The emphasis is on French cuisine and service, but the multicultural nature of this city means you can seek out dishes from all over the world.
You'll find posh eateries in the financial centre and business district close to top hotels. Eat Greek at Milos on Parc Avenue. For traditional French cuisine, go to Sherbrooke Street. Highly recommended O Chalet is home to Mediterranean-inspired delights and Peel Street has a number of upmarket establishments.
Sample Portuguese or Brazilian food on Ontario Street. Top-quality sushi bars line St Catherine Street and romantic hideaways and grills are tucked away on Amherst.
Montreal is known for its smoked meat and corned beef. Montrealers love their terraces; some of the best are on Mont Royal and residential side streets such as Gilford. For a mix of art, live music and vegetarian food, St Laurent is the place.
Tipping is a discretionary 10-15%. Some restaurants allow you to bring your own bottle of wine. Late-night dining is centred on St Denis Street in the Plateau district and a popular 24-hour diner is Club Sandwich in the Village.
