Montreal - Get Around

Most of Montreal is built on an island in the mighty St Lawrence River but the greater metropolitan area fans out to other islands.

To the west is celebrated Little Italy. Downtown is where you find much of the financial centre, the trendy Plateau area, and the mansions of Westmount. Walking north, you pass through Chinatown and Quartier Latin on the way to the gay area of the Village and Olympic Park. East is Old Montreal and the Old Port.

Metro

Montreal's extensive underground metro system connects the city.

Taxi

Montreal cabbies will get you where you want to go quickly. The drivers are great for insider information – in French or English.

Bus

Public buses have got the city covered, although they struggle in rush hour. After the Metro shuts down, night buses ply certain routes.

Foot

Walking in the downtown area will take you around Mont Royal, the Plateau, the Village, the Old Port, Chinatown and Old Montreal.

Boat

Cruise on the St Lawrence River and watch the city's sparkling skyline come alive during the evening.

Transport Tips

If you're using public transit you can buy a one-day Tourist Card or a three-day card.

Time Travel

Start with breakfast at Les Remparts restaurant, built on the fortifications of Old Montreal. Then travel to the Old Fort on Ile Sainte-Helene to be greeted by soldiers in 18th-century Highlanders costume. Tour Olympic Park in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district and get a feel for the 1976 Olympic Summer Games.
