You can escape for a day in a corner of one the boroughs or head for the hills
instead.
Coney Island and the Bronx Zoo remain popular day-trip destinations within
the five boroughs, but further out of town there are plenty of day-trip and weekend
highlights. The Hudson Valley is dotted with historic homes from New
York's Age of Innocence. Long Island gets increasingly bucolic the
further from the boroughs you go, while just an hour or two upstate from NYC are the
superb Catskill Mountains. Philadelphia and Atlantic City are
within two hours' drive.
