Adorn yourself in glamour at Tiffany & Co, hunt down avant-garde fashions in SoHo, or dress down to dress up in the Village.
The smartest shops are on Madison Avenue and nearby Fifth Avenue (home to Tiffany & Co). Saks, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Barney's New York and Bergdorf Goodman are the top department stores. Head to SoHo for one-off boutiques and designer labels and Greenwich Village or the Lower East Side for vintage clothes.
One of the biggest and most famous food markets is the Union Square Greenmarket, which sells locally grown organic and traditional produce. Follow the cool crowd to The Market NYC, held every weekend in a youth centre's gymnasium on Mulberry Street, where you'll find independent designers hawking their wares at great prices. For furniture, decorations, jewellery, clothing and works of art, try Annex/Hell's Kitchen Flea Market on 9th and 10th Avenues. Chelsea Market in West Chelsea is a food lover's paradise.
Standard shopping hours are Monday to Saturday 9am-6pm, but many stores open later and on Sundays. Department stores open daily, except on Thanksgiving (fourth Thu in Nov) and Christmas Day. Clothing and shoes under $110 are not eligible for 4% city sales tax. There is no tax refund for goods purchased.
