When you can't take the city pace, escape to the peace of Monet's
lily ponds at Giverny or seek seaside sophistication at Deauville.
The neat palace and gardens of Versailles are just a 40-minute journey on the RER
commuter train, but Parisians prefer the gentler pleasures of Meudon, on the way
to Versailles, with its forest and view over the whole of Paris, or royal
Fontainebleau. Follow the Impressionist trail to the quirky village of
Auvers-sur-Oise in Paris Ile-de-France. See the lilies in bloom at
Monet's Garden in Giverny or take a boat trip and dance beside the river
at Nogent-sur-Marne's guinguettes (dances). Seaside
Trouville and its smarter neighbour Deauville are two hours away. If the
children have been good, take them to Disneyland Paris.
