Catch a show of Brazilian theatre, visit a burial site turned sculpture park, applaud the sunset and admire folk art.
The CCBB (Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil) houses exhibition spaces, cinema, theatre, and live shows, while the most important theatre is the Teatro Municipal, worth a visit for its architecture alone. The Parque da Catacumba was formerly used as a burial place by local indigenous tribes and has been turned into a peaceful sculpture park. From the top of the hill there's a great view over Rodrigo de Freitas lake. You might even meet a family of Cebus monkeys. The Arpoador is one of the best places to admire the sunset and people have made a habit of applauding heaven for this colourful spectacle. The folk art museum Casa do Pontal and the house and garden of landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx are located in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes area.
The Maracanã was considered the largest soccer stadium in the world when it was inaugurated in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. A mighty 200,000 fans watched the final between Brazil and Uruguay, but were badly disappointed by a surprising victory by the Uruguayans.
