Hunt down jewellery in the exclusive shops of Copacabana. The Fashion Mall offers the best overall choice of clothes and other high-street-type shops, but you can also try the Shopping da Gavea, Barra Shopping, or Rio Sul. The Rua Visconde de Pirajá in Ipanema has numerous designer shops. For deals rather than extravagance, have a look downtown on the Saara, and around the streets of Gonçalves Dias, Buenos Aires, Senhor dos Passos, and Alfândega .
The Babilônia Feira Hype takes place once a month, in the Jockey Club or in Barra, selling clothing, artwork and food. The Feira de São Cristóvão market sells a mix of items and is also a great place to go out at weekends and dance to north-eastern rhythms. The Feira Hippie sets up its handicraft stalls on Sundays in the Praça General Osório in Ipanema. Here you can buy woodwork, paintings, clothes, and cangas (beach towels made out of light cotton). The Rio Antigo antiques market takes place every first Saturday of the month in the Rua do Lavradio in Lapa.
Standard opening hours for malls are Monday to Saturday 10am-10pm, Sunday 3pm-9pm. Markets have individual opening hours. Haggling is commonplace on markets: it is not always successful, but is worth a try and can be fun once you enter into the spirit of it. In shops, if you pay cash, you could sometimes be eligible for a discount.
