Flee the city heat to cooling hills and streams, or soak up the sun on the beach in
Ostia – all around an hour away from town.
Romans take flight as soon as the sun comes out and fill the sandy beaches of
Ostia, peppered with bars and discos to cater for all hedonistic and sun-seeking
tastes. Those with more imperial pretensions head to the hills of Tivoli for a glimpse
of the imperial Hadrian's Villa and the Borgia family pleasure palace,
Villa d'Este. Beyond the Castelli Romani are the gardens and
medieval town of Ninfa, so named after a lovely nymph who cried so copiously for
her lover that her tears created a stream.
