Strange but True
Legend has it that Rome's one female Pope, Joan (855 to 858), disguised
herself as a man to live in sin with her lover before catching religion. During a
procession, Joan gave birth on the spot before being stoned to death (along with her
newborn). A scruffy shrine on Via Quattro Santi marks the spot.
