Bring a healthy appetite - essential for all that paella - and a swimsuit for a spontaneous dash to the beach.

See in the spring with firecrackers and effigy-burnings at the famous five-day festival Las Fallas (15-19 Mar). Watch the city turn into a sea of flowers for the Feria de Julio (Jul) and hear cars roar round the marina area for the Formula One Grand Prix (Aug). Travel out to the tiny Valencian town of Bunyol for the annual messy tomato fight La Tomatina (Aug).

Weather

Valencia has a Mediterranean climate, so you can enjoy the outdoors all year round, with warm and dry summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are the wettest seasons, but are nonetheless comfortable temperature-wise. July and August average 25ºC, while January drops to around 10ºC.

You might need a few costume changes – light and cool for sightseeing, and casual chic for post-tapas bar hopping. Don't forget to cover up for visiting the churches: beachwear should be strictly for the beach.
