The Carmel Mission Basilica houses a collection of some of the most significant religious artefacts in California.

The mission was founded in 1770 by Father Junipero Serra and is still home to a thriving Catholic community. The building and its grounds have been fully restored after falling into disrepair in the years after 1836.

Visitors get an idea of how life was was back in the mission's early days. The museum houses California's first library, which was established in 1770 and contained over 2000 volumes by 1820. Other exhibits include a collection of tools and equipment used by the Spaniards and Native Americans in their daily life at the mission. The spartan room where Serra lived has been recreated in detail, as has the mission's kitchen.
