Anish Kapoor

Rome's Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea presents the work of contemporary artist Anish Kapoor. The show is part of the programme begun in 1995, consisting of personal exhibits of contemporary artists active in the last 30 years of the 20th century, both Italian and foreign, whose work reveals a close connection or cultural reference to Italy.

Born in Bombay in 1954, with an Indian father and Iraqi mother, Anish Kapoor moved to London at 19 and attended the Hornesey College of Art and the Chelsea College of Art. At the end of the 1970s he created a series of installations analysing the themes that would become fundamental in his artistic evolution; ritual, the ambiguity of reality, the male-female dichotomy, and sexuality.

In 1979 he traveled through India and "discovered" pure colour, which became a significant element in the poetics of the Eighties. In those years the artist evolved in the direction of a greater awareness of his own identity, balanced between the traditions of the East and West.
