Shoot Out - 24 Hour Film Making Festival
Hollywood might take years to create a film, but Shoot Out throws down the gauntlet with a challenge to make one in 24 hours. The top ten films are usually screened on the Sunday night of the three-day event.
Before the Steven Spielbergs of the world faint at the folly of it all, it should be said that the films are only seven minutes long, and there is no post-production editing or cutting. The organisers claim that all you need are friends and a camera, and provide post-filming facilities such as a copyright-free music library and a dubbing suite to enhance what you've already filmed.
To ensure each film is made in 24 hours, participants are given a brief with something like 15 items, of which at least five must appear in the film. A plethora of awards are made at the end of the festival in 2008, the top prize was a massive A$18,000 for the best film.
It's a craze that is seriously beginning to catch on. In addition to the original Shoot Out Newcastle, New South Wales claims another in Toowoomba, Victoria boasts one in Geelong, while New Zealanders head to Hamilton. Way across the other side of the Pacific, Colorado has also jumped on the bandwagon, so budding short (and spontaneous) filmmakers can take their camera and ideas to Boulder for the first American version.
All that needs to be done is to repeat the organisers exhortation: "Your mission is, in 24 hours, to make seven minutes count. Time is the enemy and imagination your only weapon. It's for filmmakers with guts!"
