Directors' Fortnight
The Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors' Fortnight) is an alternative to the official Cannes film selection and runs concurrently with the famous festival. Afterwards, the films are all shown in Paris at the Forum des Images.
In 1968, French society was in turmoil. That year's Cannes Festival was interrupted by a handful of filmmakers, among them François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, angry at Henri Langlois's eviction as director of the Cinémathèque Française.
Not content with bringing the festival to a premature close, the filmmakers obtained the reinstatement of Langlois and at the same time formed the Société des Réalisateurs de Films (SRF), which aimed to "defend artistic, moral, professional and economic freedom in filmmaking", and under whose aegis the Directors' Fortnight was later born.
The SRF has stayed faithful to its original mandate. Taking care to implicate itself in a long-standing tradition which has always brought French filmmakers together to defend their art, the organisation has remained steadfastly representative, and has provided inspiration for the creation of filmmakers' organisations in numerous countries.
