If you love the wintry aroma of roasting chestnuts, make a beeline for San Giovanni Ilarione around the second Sunday of October, when chestnut-related fun takes over the town. Chestnuts are 'threshed' (de-shelled) in the main square.

It's a Christmas-time tradition in Italy to eat vietter - dried chestnuts boiled in water for five hours so they become soft and tender. Visitors can stock up on the freshest sweet chestnuts in time for the winter feast and enjoy the processions of costumed locals who parade down the main streets of the town.

Chestnuts come in two varieties - castagne (small, brown, a pain to peel) and marroni (larger and more luscious).
