Better known for its world-famous white wine, Soave is a beautiful walled town near Verona. In December the town's 14th-century Palazzo del Capitano is transformed into a corner of Palestine circa 2000BC in a recreation of the Nativity scene.
Artists, sculptors, craftspeople and locals all do their bit to create the Presepe Gigante (Giant Nativity), whose centrepiece is, of course, a rendering of the Holy Family in Bethlehem. What's more, the main scene is surrounded by hundreds of tiny figures - magi, sheep, even stars! Each one is made by hand and volunteers contribute new figures every year.
