Polish Contemporary Opera Festival

Warsaw Chamber Opera's ever-expanding programme, which already includes its annual Mozart festival and the more recently established Monteverdi festival, now includes a Polish Contemporary Opera festival that was first held in 2004. After a rest during Mozart's 250th anniversary year, expect it to be back in 2007!

In 2005 three operas were featured: Bernadetta Matuszczak Quo Vadis, Zbigniew Rudzinski's Antigone and Zygmunt Krauze's Balthazar, each given two performances.

The Warsaw Chamber Opera, established in 1961, performs a wide variety of Baroque, Classical and Contemporary music, and gained worldwide recognition after its first Mozart Festival in 1991, on the 200th anniversary of the composer's death. The company is the only one in the world to have all of Mozart's operas permanently in their repertoire alongside contemporary Polish opera (as here), Monteverdi and other Baroque masters. In 2006 the focus is very much on Mozart, as well as celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the company. Extensive touring throughout the year includes visits to Spain, Lebanon, France, Switzerland and Japan.
