Beating the Bounds

0nce a year on Ascension Day, members of St Michael's congregation process through Oxford marking out the parish boundary in a traditional ceremony known as "the Beating of the Bounds."

The process involves beating specially marked boundary stones with sticks and, since some of the stones are in bars, pubs and shops, startling bemused onlookers. The day finishes with a drink of ivy beer, doughnuts and a scramble for hot pennies thrown from the roof of Lincoln College.
