Schlagermove
The whole world and his mistress turns out for the Schlagermove festival in Hamburg's Heiligengeistfeld. The highlight is the truck parade, where people with bouffant hairdos, sequins and spangles dance atop trucks in the streets of the St Pauli district.
The recipe for a good Schlager? Take lyrics that can be sung under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol, repeat the chorus several times and preferably add a liberal sprinkling of the words "love", "happiness" and "sunshine", then round off with an oh-so-kitsch Stock, Aitken & Waterman beat. Simple, but if the crowds here are anything to go by, very, very effective.
After the parade on the Saturday the line-up in the party tents is a mix of 1970s-1990s Schlager classics, Neue Deutsche Welle and cult Schlager.
