Hong Kong Museum of Art
The vast brick Hong Kong Museum of Art on Tsim Sha Tsui's waterfront is a serene collection of Chinese calligraphy and delicate landscapes. Highlights include 17th-century flowing calligraphic poems, huge Qing dynasty statues and temporary collections by local artists.
Showcasing 11,000 objects, the museum explores the cultural background and rapid historical development of Hong Kong. The 3000 items on display provide a cultural record of decoration and objects designed for both daily use and special ritualistic purposes.
The Xubaizhai Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy was donated by a certain Mr Low, whose dismay at seeing classical Chinese art flowing out of Hong Kong after the Second World War saw him buy up as much as he could.
