Gawthorpe Maypole Procession

when:May 2010 (annual)
where:Gawthorpe
cost:Free to watch

For well over a century, the Gawthorpe Maypole Procession has raised money for elderly members of Gawthorpe village. The procession on the High Street includes themed floats, majorettes, vintage vehicles, marching bands and, of course, the May Queen herself.

The Maypole has a special significance for the people of Gawthorpe. When the first recorded permanent Maypole was erected back in 1850, jealous inhabitants of the nearby village of Chickenely attempted to cut it down, resulting in a bloody battle and one violent death. Fortunately, these days local villages join in peacefully with the annual procession.
