Macau Grand Prix

when:Nov 2010 (annual)
where:Guia Cicuit

During late November the quiet and charming enclave of Macau comes alive with the roar of powerful engines. The Macau Grand Prix spawns a heady carnival atmosphere as one of Asia's most glamorous sport spectacles comes to town.

The Macau Grand Prix is the only event in the Formula 3 calendar which is held in the picturesque streets of the island's capital - only one hour by jetfoil from Hong Kong - and it is the only motorsport event in the world to mix the highest quality car and motorcycle racing on a street circuit.

Although the origins of the Macau Grand Prix are humble (it was originally conceived as an amateur race for local motoring enthusiasts), it has grown into a major international sports event which in the past has been a springboard for young racers such as Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rather admirably, despite its global acclaim, the event has not forgotten its beginnings and there are plenty of non-professional races too.

When you're done with the day's racing, take some time out from the Macau Grand Prix to explore this latest acquisition of China's, formerly in Portuguese hands for more than 400 years. Amble along the cobblestone lanes and soak up the unique blend of East and West, or take advantage of the festival ambience and its accompanying activities. These include specially organised music, food and cultural events and a lavish fireworks display.
