Maldon Mud Race
Work off all that Christmas pudding by plunging up to your neck in glorious mud, all in aid of charity. Join the Maldon Mud Race to sprint, plod or even crawl across the River Blackwater's estuary in Essex.
Wet, mad and muddy, some 200 participants face the slippery banks and the river's low water as they gird their loins and summon determination and nerves of steel to complete the challenge.
Tape footwear on to stop it being suctioned off and be reconciled to the fact that no washing powder will get Essex's finest mud off the fancy dress you're running in. It's not exactly good, 'clean' fun, although the 2000 annual spectators might think so!
In 2009 former BBC Sports Personality and Olympic javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread starts the race.
