Tomintoul, Moray, looking along the main street

when:Jul 2010 (annual)
where:Tomintoul
cost:£4; concessions £2
time:11am

One of the oldest Highland Games in the calendar, first held in 1842, the Tomintoul Highland Games celebrate all things Scottish. Alongside the "heavy" sports in Tomintoul's Public Park, there are piping competitions, Highland dancing and the Tominabat Hill Race.

The one-day event showcases all the traditional Highland Games, harking back to the warrior clan days. The "heavy" events - the shot putt, hammer throwing and caber tossing - feature large men in tartan sweating profusely as they hurl large objects as far as they can. Then there are the more artistic activities - Scottish dancing and both solo and massed bagpiping. Towards the end of the day there is a children's fancy dress competition.
