The Museums of the Moscow Kremlin

Red Square's Museums of the Moscow Kremlin's attractions include Ivan the Terrible's throne and the Tsars' tombs in the Cathedral of the Archangel. Morning tickets for the Armoury's Fabergé eggs and other treasures sell fast - afternoons are a better bet.

For some 800 years the feared seat of power - whether of the Tsars or the Communist Party - Moscow's Kremlin is now more open to visitors than it's ever been. Though still to this day the centre of Russian politics, the Kremlin contains some of Moscow's most outstanding museums.

Enclosed within its massive bulwarks are not only the seat of government, in the Senate and Presidium, and the Arsenal (none open to the public) but also various palaces. These include the State Kremlin Palace, home to the Kremlin Ballet Theatre.

It is also home to the Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles, Cathedral of the Annunciation and Church of the Deposition of the Robe, as well as the Armoury with its precious stone collection, the State Diamond Fund.
