Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro comprises 12 lines criss-crossing the Russian capital. While underground travel in other cities is often direct and simple in style, using the Moscow Metro is a truly educational experience. Start at Metro Station Ploshchad Revolyutsii with its bronze figurines.
In 1937 the opulent designs of the stations - described as "Moscow's underground palaces" - won prizes at the Paris international exhibition, with Mayakovskaya station awarded the Grand-Prix.
See mosaics of traditional Ukrainian folk scenes at Kievskaya, and the neo-classical sculptures at Park Kultury stations. Visit Sportivnaya station for the Metro Museum (Thursday only, 10am-4pm).
