Bike Week - cycling through the gorse
| when: | Jun 2010 (annual) |

Scotland pedals its way full pelt for this year's Bike Week and its associate self-explanatory programme Bike2Work.
Whether it's taking part in the annual 63-mile Edinburgh to St Andrews bike ride that kicks off the festival in Scotland, or the final "two capital's ride" from the old Scottish capital Dunfermline to Edinburgh on the final day, there is something for everyone who has ever thought of taking up cycling.
First held in 1923 and now, in our much more health-conscious and climate-aware 21st century, even more important in highlighting the benefits of biking, Bike Week expects you to swap either two legs or four wheels for two wheels.
Edinburgh hosts the Edinburgh Bicycle Film Festival (15-24 June), offering not only bike-fixated features but also animations, documentaries and shorts.
As well as Bike Clinics (Hamilton Central on 18 June, Ayr on 21 June and Glasgow Queen Street on 22 June), why not try the 23-mile Kingussie Bikeathon (17 June) - not only a beautiful route through the Scottish Highlands but also a fund-raiser for Bike Week's charity partner, Leukaemia Research - or the slightly longer CTC Glasgow Ride (also 17 June), heading south from the centre into Ayrshire and back, mainly keeping to cycle lanes and parks.
Edinburgh hosts the MSPS Cycle Ride Edinburgh (20 June) while the Renfrew Council Cycle Festival (23-24 June) takes place in Paisley Town and the Scottish Mountain Bike Championship takes over Gleniffer Braes Country Park (24 June).
Check out the Bike Week website for the plethora of peddling possibilities.

| The historic kingdom of Scotland, recently freed from the shackles of nearly 400 years of direct rule from London with the foundation of its own assembly, is one of the most beautiful countries, with its lochs, glens and heather, and a vibrant land of imagination, industry and invention. From its castles, clans (from whom so many visitors seem to be descended!) and distilleries, with its fine literary traditions which have given us the likes of Robbie Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson, Scotland is all things to all men. For the sporting types golf and curling are traditional activities, while no self-respecting settlement can be without its traditional Highland Games each summer. From the awe-inspiring landscape - from Highlands to Islands - to the cultural feast that overwhelms Edinburgh every August (the tattoo, international, fringe, jazz, film and book festivals filling the city), Scotland has something for everyone, and not just bagpipes, haggis, tartan and whisky! |
