Mayakoba Golf Classic
The El Camaleón Golf Club in Playa del Carmen is the venue for the Mayakoba Golf Classic, part of the US PGA Tour since 2007. The winner's share of the US$3.6 million purse is a cool US$630,000.
Golf history was made in February 2007 when the PGA Tour conducted its first regular-season, official-money event in México at the inaugural Mayakoba Golf Classic. The first tournament to go "south of the border" saw veteran Fred Funk capture the inaugural title in a thrilling two-hole sudden death playoff against Argentina's Jose Coceres.
